Based
in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Hasbro Industries Inc. was originally
housed in an old New England brick mill which Hasbro wished to renovate,
adding the distinctive flavor of its own personality while maintaining
historic continuity. BMA's 350,000 square foot renovation of the
Hasbro Headquarters, included the marketing, research and development,
and product engineering departments.
The
overall effect of the renovation is one of high-tech sophistication
in an historic setting. Allusion to the surrounding New England
towns is found in the new organization of the building; a skylit
'Main Street' and smaller cross streets feed individual departments.
As in a town, the building has an general character, while each
department, like a neighborhood, has its own distinct identity.
The design enhances the features of the existing warehouses-north-facing
sawtooth skylights, robust masonry walls, and slender cast-iron
columns-while it adds a new sophistication in terms of organization,
color, shapes, and furnishings.
