One
of many such buildings, 1801 Century Park West began life a steel-framed
tower with 6 office floors over 3 floors of parking, all clad in
a dark bronze curtainwall. Barton Myers Associates was engaged to
renovate the building so that it read as an entirely new structure.
The
tower was articulated as two volumes; the eastern half, facing the
high-rises of Century City, was re-clad in a clear glass curtainwall,
while the other half was re-skinned with gypsum plaster and individual
windows in blue-green glass, reflecting the stucco boxes of its
neighbors to the west, and responding to the severe heat loads of
that exposure. At the top of the tower, a two-story glass box serves
as a highly visible beacon along the visual axis west from Beverly
Hills.
The
automobile is addressed as the primary means of entering the building
by creating a 'car court' on the ground floor, opening the east
facade to the street and providing a dramatic space for drop-off
and visitor parking.
